Landscaping Your Garden - Tips

General Landscaping

Landscaping your garden is a big job that will not only take a large chunk of your time, but a large chunk of your money as well. Should you be considering of hiring someone to do most of the work, there are a few ideas that will help you, and also avoid the expense of a professional designer possibly, provided you have a flat workspace that is.

Firstly, think about the end result you want given the type of land you  are working with. As an example, the garden design plans for land that slopes heavily would make it more difficult to construct a pond! In the case of such a landscape, you may be advised to use the professionals, as things are unlikely to be straight forward. Decide beforehand how you are likely to use the spot. Do you entertain, have children, need a pool or have specific ideas on plants etc.

Start with the place where you will spend the most time and then look out for landscape design software and books. Consider how much time you will have to tend the land. If the idea of spending all your time doing the gardening is not one that fills you with glee, make sure you take that into account when planning the planting and care side of your design. Try matching the design of your garden to the shape of the property as well; for example, a rustic old country cottage will look a little strange against very formal gardens.

A formal garden involves a very ordered arrangement with neat straight lines. The nature of such clean lines and close knit plants will make for a lot of work to keep them looking pristine. Conversely, informal gardens have rounded borders and more loosely planted vegetation. You can merge the two styles in separate areas though; keep one side formal and have it leading into a more rounded spot. You will often find this with some of the larger stately homes, sharp geometric lines and sometimes brick walls that will lead you into a less formal garden area.

An English country garden is a trend that many people like as it tends to harmonise with the shape of the house and garden. An English garden design can look at bit like organised chaos! But within such a garden, there will be an abundance of diverse, beautiful flowers.

If you only have a small space, try creating the oriental look with plenty of evergreens, rocks and a nice tranquil water feature.

The above are just a selection of the possibilities of different styles for landscaping your garden. Make sure you have a good look around at magazines and other people’s gardens and adapt something you like to your own space. When you have decided what you actually want, then create the design yourself on a landscape design software program. Doing this will allow you to adjust the design as you go.
